Low Quality Featured Images

Hi all,

I’m having issues with the featured images being low quality to the point where it’s very noticeable, pixelated and blurry. While the original image is sharp.

– IonMag, Version 1.5.1
– My featured images are 1000px at the longest edge, 72 – 150 dpi (it doesn’t seem to matter what dpi it is. it still gets compressed to low quality.

– In my pursuit to resolve this, I downloaded the WP Smush plugin. This doesn’t seem to do anything in terms of quality.
– I also have this in functions.php
// image quality
add_filter(‘jpeg_quality’, function($arg){return 100;});

I’m not sure what else to do at this point. My website is image heavy so it’s important for the featured images to be higher quality. Anybody else experienced similar issues? What else can I try to resolve it?

Hello,

This could be a plugin conflict so please disable all plugins except the page builder, clear cache and reset cdn files if you use it. Please also check any custom code you might have added to the theme panel or the theme files. If you use a child theme, please switch to the main theme to make sure it does not affect the proper functionality of the theme.

Thank you!

Thanks for your response! The image quality is still low in posts on homepage thumbnails after disabling plugins and clearing the cache. Is that just how image quality is set for featured images on this theme? I notice that in the demo, featured images are a little pixelated also.

I forgot to mention that when the browser is resized, featured images on the home page gets extremely blurry. I think this has to do with the ways the thumbnails are rendered.

For example, Block 2 has smaller thumbnails than Big Grid 1 so the when resized, the thumbnails are blurry. Not sure if there’s a way to fix that though.

Hi,

The theme creates the necessary thumbnails from the featured images that you upload for the posts. Each module has a it’s own required thumbnail size
https://www.wpion.com/members/theme-thumbs/
The cropping system used is center top, this method is thought to be the most suited in this regard
https://www.wpion.com/members/featured-images/
If the images you use have good quality, the thumbnails created should be the same. The theme by default does not alter the thumbnail quality. When you already have existing content and you install the theme, you must regenerate the thumbnails
https://www.wpion.com/members/using-the-theme-with-existing-content/
If you could provide a link to your website, we will take a look, and see if there is anything wrong with the thumbnails.
Or you can send us an email at [email protected] and provide admin login information, in order to investigate further. Also paste a link to this topic in your email.

Thanks

Hi,

You can see all the theme thumbs in Theme Panel > Block Settings – https://www.screencast.com/t/FukP4n2t The featured image you upload and set must have at least the size of the thumb used on modules/post templates to be cropped. So it depends on you what modules, blocks and post templates you use.

Thanks!

Hi
these are settings for cropping of images
And what width and height are recommended, for example, for images in post

Hi,

Sorry for the delay. There is no recommended size, for example the live demo uses featured images around this size
https://www.screencast.com/t/cjr8yuFWa
Bigger images can be used, then better quality thumbnails will be created from them. Each module requires a different thumbnail size, the results will not be the same when using different modules to display the same post.
The theme uses a center-top cropping, so depending on the thumbnail size the results are different.

Thanks

I’m having the exact same issue. The featured image thumbnails are of low quality. It is a food blog and photography plays a big role.

For example, on the Eat like Iris website, the thumbnail is this: https://www.eatlikeiris.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/IMG_20171112_141954-e1512900446710-300×220.jpg

Although the original photo from which the featured image was created is this: https://www.eatlikeiris.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/IMG_20171112_141954-e1512900446710.jpg

Is there a way to put a higher resolution image and let the browser shrink it? I know this is bad practice but it should help create a nicer thumbnail. Can I specify which thumbnail I want to have or is it always going to be a 300×220 thumbnail for block 2, created by the theme when specifying the featured image on the post?

Thank you very much

I am getting the same issue.

If you look at the front page of the site

http://sarnews.mywhc.ca

You’ll see that the block under the header has terribly rendered thumbnails. The block under that seems to have a much better resolution, but it isn’t the layout that I want.

Note, my monitor resolution is 1920 x 1080

Hi,

The theme will not affect the thumbnails in terms of quality, the original images are cropped. No filters or other modifications will be made. If your original images are of good quality the thumbnails will be as well.

@michaelf The thumbnails seem to be created properly from what I can tell. The only way to control the thumbnails size would be to try other blocks. These sizes are predefined in the theme for each module, the blocks are designed with this functionality in mind.

@rcmsar The thumbnails are not created as they should on the website. Please regenerate the thumbnails, this is a guide
https://www.wpion.com/members/using-the-theme-with-existing-content/
This process will recreate all the thumbnails needed for the modules, given they are enabled in the theme panel
https://www.wpion.com/members/theme-thumbs/

Thanks

Hey,

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately it was not successful. I regenerated the thumbnails, cleared cache, tried retina versions, cleared cache, and they still look terrible.

Hi,

Still the thumbnails are not created. The regeneration process requires the installation of GD library for PHP on the server for image processing. Please make sure that you have it installed and enabled on your server before regenerating thumbnails. Contact the hosting provider if possible and make inquiries.
I believe that would be one situation where the regeneration process will not work. Let us know the results.

Thanks

Why is this happening? Is this a fault with the theme?

I currently have the ability to install whatever I like on the server, but when I move this to the client’s web host, I will not have this ability. If this is going to be a problem with this theme moving forward, then I may have to rethink using it.

Please help me understand why this is an issue.

Hi,

I believe most hosting providers offer this by default, issues like this are very rare to happen. I can’t remember the last time something like this was to blame. You can find more information about this here

Thanks
